Microsoft Confirms $199 Slim & Kinect Bundles

An internal Q & A sheet from Microsoft’s marketing department confirms an ‘arcade’ version of the newly launched Xbox 360 slim to ship this fall. According to the documents the arcade slim will be priced at the same price point as the current model - $199 USD. The documents also confirmed that Kinect will be available as both a ‘stand alone product’ and ‘in a bundle’.

The kinect bundles are listed over at Amazon and Gamestop for $299 (arcade) and $399 (250gig) respectively. If you are thinking of upgrading to the slim you might want to wait for these bundles to hit as they save you $50 off the rumored MSRP for Kinect. No information was provided regarding the storage available for the $199 configuration. If it follows the current model then it will be packaged with 512MB of flash memory.

We will have more information on these new Xbox 360 bundles as they become available.

Update: Updated the article to reflect the fact that the $150 pricepoint for Kinect is an unconfirmed rumor at this time. The $150 price has been listed on major retailers such as GameStop and Amazon.com but has yet to be confirmed by Microsoft.

Square No Plans For 360 Version of Final Fantasy 14

Square Enix has been a strong supporter of the Xbox 360 since its launch in 2005 but the next iteration of Final Fantasy may be Windows only. During E3 Square Enix Vice President of software development Hiromichi Tanaka was quoted as saying “Currently there are no plans for a version [of FF 14] for the Xbox 360”. The last time Square Enix spoke publicly about FFXIV they were ‘working with Mircosoft’ on an agreement to bring the title to the 360.

Square Enix’s last major releases for the Xbox 360 include Nier, Final Fantasy 13 and the recently published Supreme Commander 2. Final Fantasy XIV is scheduled to be released on PC and Playstation 3 in Fall 2010 and has an open beta expected to begin later this summer.

Kinect Can Detect Children

It has been known for a while Kinect can detect the skeletal structure of any gamers using the device. Developers have taken note and created some interesting features for their games using this principal. The upcoming racer Joy Ride is able to detect the user’s height and adjusts the difficulty accordingly. This is not to say that taller gamers will have a more difficult time with the game – it is meant to detect children playing.

Before you think about cheating by kneeling down in front your television while playing Joy Ride it can detect that too. The developers stated that it uses the full skeletal structure including the knees to detect the player’s height. The game will know if you’re trying to cheat it!

This is certainly a creative use of Kinect’s abilities. As time progresses hopefully we will see more inventive ways to use the motion camera.

The RROD Is No More

Microsoft has replaced the familiar Red Rings of Death (RROD) that signifies a catastrophic system failure. Until one of the new 360 Slims break we’re not really sure what the new error system is. Speaking with IGN Xbox 360 Microsoft Corporate Vice President Phil Spencer the system has a new way of reporting various errors.

“Now obviously, the box has a way to communicate to you if something has happened...but yes, three red lights are not part of our sequence of telling somebody something is wrong. Obviously if you look at the success rate of the original 360s, we're very proud of both the way the company stepped up to support the customers that we had as well as the success rate we have with the box today. I think we've learned a lot. That learning has gone into the development of this [new] box."

Call of Duty Black Ops Gameplay

Call of Duty: Black Ops is the seventh game in the long running Call of Duty Franchise. World at War developers Treyarch are leaving World War 2 behind for a contemporary setting – the cold war. This is the first COD game developed by Treyarch that involved multiple teams inside the studio. According to reports dedicated teams are handling the motion capture, multiplayer and single player portions of the game.

At E3 2010 Treyarch had two levels available in their demo. The demo starts off with two fighter pilots while controlling one of them in low orbit your goal is to move them to cover while avoiding enemy positions. Once on the ground your goal switches to the elimination of an enemy placement. Combining flight vehicle sections with on ground combat seems like a good change of pace for the series.

The portion of Black Ops showcased at Microsoft’s press conference centered on an attack on a helicopter. In true Call of Duty style this is accomplished not with machineguns but a tremendous amount of rocket fire.

Call of Duty: Black Ops releases on the Xbox 360, PC and PS3 on November 9th 2010. Check out the full trailer below and keep your eye on TeamXbox.com for more information as it becomes available.

Gears of War 3 Beast Mode Revealed

Gears of War 3 is the last game in the planned trilogy of Xbox 360 exclusives developed by Epic Games and published by Microsoft Games Studios. The story of Gears 3 takes place eighteen months after the events of Gears of War 2 and the loss of the human stronghold of Jacinto. Marcus, Baird, Dom and company will have to fight new imulsion infused monsters throughout the games single player campaign.

The single player experience has evolved quite a bit since the last time we saw it. As shown in the trailer shown during Microsoft press conference players now have the ability to lunge forward and take care of their foes with a well placed throw. The locust hordes also have some new tactics at their disposal – the ability to dismember COGs and use their severed appendages as melee weapons. Over the course of the demo locust soldiers can be seen mutating in to grotesque creatures with extended arms. Mutated locusts can now spawn other baddies in some situations as well.

The multiplayer portion of Gears 3 also gets a bit of a facelift with a new mode called ‘Beast Mode’. This mode is similar to the horde mode from previous editions but with a twist – you play as the locust horde and their various variations. These include the ticker – a small bug that explodes on contact – this would be a great chance to get close to an enemy COG and blow them to smithereens.

As players kill enemies they will gain experience and ranks that will unlock further locust roles to be used in Beast Mode. Players do not have access to the strongest role right out of the box. In order to play as everyone’s favorite angry locust, the berserker, a certain level must be obtained. Unlike horde mode you have more than one life. Once you have died you can switch to anyone of roles that have already been unlocked.

Gears of War 3 is expected to ship in April 2011 and further impressions and information will be available later in the week. Until enjoy the two video features embedded in this article.

Gears of War 3 Details Emerge

Halo Reach Firefight Details

IGN Xbox 360 had a chance to go all out in Halo: Reach’s improved firefight mode and they bring us some new details about the enhancements along with the first ever gameplay videos. For the uninformed ‘Firefight’ pits anywhere between 1 -4 spartans in Combat against computer controlled Covenant enemies. These enemies arrive via dropships and are rolled out in waves. In Halo 3:ODST players could expect 5 rounds featuring increasing difficulties plus bonus ‘reinforcement’ dropships between rounds.

Halo Reach Firefight Details

One of the biggest improvements being introduced in Reach is the ability for Firefight matchmaking. Similar to how the multiplayer system works. Players will be able to connect to Xbox Live and find partners to assist in their covenant slaying. It is unknown at this time if this feature will be available in the single player co-op campaign but it would be nice.

Bungie is also allowing players to control the individual parameters of a Firefight match. No longer are players subject to five or six rounds that can take upwards of half an hour per round. Now the host can chose a time limit, limit the skulls that have been activated and the number of rounds until the end of the game. Players can also expect to create their own custom sets of equipments – called loadouts – for their entire party to enjoy. Bungie has also coded in a default time limit – 10 minutes.

Halo Reach Firefight Details

Individual expression also plays a huge role in the next installment of the Halo franchise. Players who took part in the beta already know that they will be able to create a custom Spartan that will appear in multiplayer and campaign. This Spartan will also carry over to the firefight mode both offline and online. It was not mentioned by Bungie whether or not the map editing ability of Forge will be available. As soon as more details turn up we will be sure to bring them to you.

E3 2010 Notes from EA's Press Conference

EA sent out an inbox full of press releases during their press conference, but here are my notes from the theater as it was presented this afternoon which may (or may not) hold some extra details that interest you:

E3 2010: Electronic Arts Press Conference

EA has jammed hundreds of attendees into the Orpheum Theater in downtown Los Angeles, handing each person entering a pair of 3D glasses labeled Crysis 2 . Considering the size of the stage, I can only imagine the size of the screen we'll see the game on.

While this is all being posted at once and I'm not live-blogging it (horrendous internet connection here), I'm still writing it chronologically, so follow along if you weren't watching one of the live feeds already.

We've just past 2pm, the projected start time for the conference. Plenty of people still mulling about and no warnings to sit down. Since EA has already announced their full lineup for the show, curious to see what kind of surprises (if any) they'll throw into the mix. Perhaps they consider seeing Crysis 2 on a giant screen surprise enough.

First up is a brand new Need for Speed trailer. It's Need for Speed Hot Pursuit, coming out on November 16th from Criterion Games. Craig Sullivan, the Criterion Creative Director, says they want to take it back to the series “roots.” That means exotic cars, epic drives and hot pursuits. It includes a full career as both a racer and a cop.

Next up was the new online service for the game called Need for Speed Autolog. It connects features for players to connect, compare and compete with friends. The program recommends ways to play. It says when you've been beaten and what your rankings are. Now they're going into a head-to-head mode, showing both viewpoints. The track is called Seacrest County. A yellow lamborghini on a bridge overlook with four cop cars in pursuit. It integrates player names into the intro of the games. There are damage meters for the getaway car and a tracked pursuit bounty for good driving. Cops can drop road blocks which gives huge damage for getaway car. Bonus points for close pursuit, high speed, and other such racing elements. Epic wreck shots. Once again, hitting stores on November 16th of this year.

Autolog is the feature they're promoting the most. John Riccitiello walks on stage, EA's CEO. He tries to say that EA's conference is the Sundance to Hollywood's Academy Awards, this is after Microsoft gave out the new Xbox to all attendees of their press conference. But I wouldn't quite equate EA to Sundance...

Steve Papoutsis, EP of Dead Space 2 is up now. Takes place on The Sprawl, a full city. Isaac takes the action “to the enemy.”

Rich Briggs, Producer, discusses the game.

Gameplay demonstration. Starts in the Church of Unitology. Breathing effects have great sound design. Isaac is being dragged around by an enormous monster. Trying to hit its weak spot. Once chased off, he's pursued by creepy baby monsters with multiple heads and sharp claws. Seriously, they look like horrible, horrible babies. Great melee moves. He's got a weapon that freezes enemies. Lots of close-combat struggles with the enemy. He's got a nail javelin gun that pins enemies to the wall across the room, much like Crackdown's harpoon. It looks fantastic. The city is enormous. Long draw distances across the full game world.

Smooth transitions from gameplay into set pieces. Like windows being blown out and Isaac is sucked out towards space where the angle changes and he must hit a button to hang on. The release date is revealed to be 1/25/2011. A bit of a wait, but it's looking good.

John is back. They want to “take back the quality bar” in the FPS genre.

Sean Decker, General Manager of EA LA, walks out to talk Medal of Honor .

EA LA is building the single player, Dice is building multiplayer. They're hoping to bring over the quality of Battlefield's multiplayer prowess. To show it off, they're doing a live 24-player demo of the game's multiplayer.

Team Assault – Deathmatch in which each side struggles to hit a predetermined number of points in order to win. Every map is inspired by real world location. The one we're being shown takes place in Kabul. It's a close-quarter combat map. Key to survival is to “keep moving.”

We're being shown each individual screen. So they're actually pretty tiny from a distance, now they're zooming in. Lots of + points for kills, assists, headshots. Player was awarded a ribbon for their performance mid-game. You get tomahawk missile control. Each point adds to the team totals. So headshots and such add up the score more quickly. Game is coming out on October 12th.

Not ones to let Halo steal the beta thunder, Medal of Honor is launching a beta on June 21st for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC users.

They're showing the first multiplayer trailer. “Based on the Military's Tier 1 Operations.”

Car bombs. Hellmand Valley. The trailer looks really good, though the gameplay – being another entry into the “modern” era – can't help but be compared to its counterparts. But they might just pull off the multiplayer aspect.

Katrina Strafford, Senior Director Online is up.

Gun Club – award program. Rewards players for playing Dead Space , Medal of Honor , Battlefield .

People who join the Club get early access to news and events.Weapon unlocks, early demos, beta access, early news: gunclub.ea.com

Looks like you might have join it in order to play the MoH beta.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 BC2 gets a downloadable expansion pack this winter: Vietnam. Seems like the kind of thing everyone has been waiting for.

Peter Moore has stepped out to talk about EA Sports.

EA Sports MMA. Randy Couture and Fedor Emelianenko will grace the cover of the game. It's been in development for over two years. They really want this franchise to take off. Each fighter recreated authentically (it's true, you've seen the screenshots) Fighting styles stay authentic.

Now they're talking EA Sports Live Broadcast. “Perform in front of thousands of fans.” You create an MMA fighter, create a hype video full of trash talk, upload it and then hope you get picked by EA recruiters to have your fights televised online and through consoles. They're hiring real sportscasters to announce the events and you can win real prizes. There's no mention of how often these events will occur.

EA Sports MMA comes out on October 19th.

Now it's time for EA Sports Active 2

It's multi-platform, wireless and online. It has distance running, a Heart Rate Monitor. 70+ exercises. Track your progress online. Instant uploads. Coming November 16, 2010.

Heart Monitor is on all platforms, just on your wrist and leg. Monitored in real time. Mountain Biking which includes jumping, crouching, and running in order to pedal.

The Xbox 360 Kinect version has high-fidelity full body training. 1-1 motion. The stage demo showcased punching a heavy bag. It registers the whole body, bobbing and weaving. All the data jumps into EA's website. You can join friends and workout groups around the world.

Peter Moore is back.

Time to talk Madden.

They're making football “simpler, quicker and deeper.” Changing the way plays are called to simplify the experience. Games take half the time. It's got 3 vs 3 co-op online. The new play calling system is called Gameflow...puts you in the huddle.

Joe Montana shows up on stage to talk about it. Audio cues give you an idea of plays to run. And the whole experience does indeed look more simple. But is this a good thing for the series? Were people really complaining that football was too complicated?

Rod Humble, President EA Play, is talking about fate. Which in turn leads to the random nature of The Sims 3 . Within the next few years they'll be toying with: theme, time, and space expansion. They're calling it“incredibly sophisticated” software on consoles. They “crammed a lot in.”
New trailer showcases some backwards stories. A kind of cause and effect karma situation. They didn't specifically talk about how The Sims 3 Console will be different.

John takes it on to EA Partners and introduces Insomniac Games and Respawn (the new West and Zampella venture).

They're showing off two new games from the partners.First up Crytek shows off Crysis 2 . Time for the glasses? Not yet. They're calling it a “new kind of sandbox.” You're given New York and get the “tools, guns, grenades, and nanosuit” to make it your sandbox. Save New York.Crytek claims it has the “most intelligent enemies of any FPS.” We're now looking at a gameplay demonstration. Looks like they're inside the New York Stock Exchange. Graphics are looking great (it's Crytek) and the AI does indeed look for new ways to kill you. The gameplay looks intense. He's just killed a Pinger with C4 underneath. The game takes on a scripted event where the entire building over the stock exchange is falling down.
Now we're putting on the 3D glasses. The game releases this holiday season in 3D on all platforms.

Tney're showing off a cinematic trailer in 3D now. It looks fantastic, but it's all cinematics, no gameplay. Looks good, but like I said...no gameplay.

Next up is Bulletstorm .

Adrian Chmielarz of People Can Fly, and Cliff Bleszinski and Tanya Jessen from Epic take the stage. They claim that while sequels and familiar Ips are great, there's “something magical about creating a new world.”

They are the first to admit that it's pulpy and over the top. It's releasing on February 22, 2011.

They then break into a gameplay demo of one of the first levels. It's definitely an Unreal Engine game, but it looks solid. Has kind of a post-apocalyptic, sunset look to it. They give “rewards for creative mayhem” called the “Skillshot” system.

One of the first tools shown is the leash. It's like a grappling hook and can both hit switches and snag enemies off their feet. There seems to be a lot of interaction with the environment including zip lines, exploding electrical equipment and much more. Lots of things are destructible.

The characters chatter constantly through the game including such catchy gems as “scared the dick off me,” and that the “imminent danger means an imminent get the fuck out of here.” Like they said...pulpy. The biggest reaction from the crowd came from the “fire in the hole” kill which involved setting an enemy ablaze via their...hole.

Last up is Bioware. They're showing off Star Wars: The Old Republic. Not exactly our territory, but the new CG trailer looks amazing...just like the last one. Now only if their PC game could look that good.

That appears to be it. John thanks everyone for coming and people begin filing out.

“Today’s children grow up with video games and accept them as a part of their play time,” said Yves Guillemot, chief executive officer at Ubisoft. “UbiConnect brings together video games and physical toys, allowing players to play the game both at and away from a video screen.”

Battle Tag is a social, physical and fun experience that brings the interactivity of video games into real life using real world toys and accessories. Battle Tag will launch across North America during this fiscal year.

Details from Microsoft's Official Kinect Show

We've already written about the official name and a few of the first games to come with Kinect.

But amidst the chaos of the Cirque du Soleil event, which felt like a mix between the Lion King musical, Zeno Clash and Peter Pan, they also showed off a few other games and features to join the Kinect lineup.

Most exciting offhand was the reveal of a Star Wars game. It showed off 1 to 1 lightsaber control in which you deflect blaster shots and duel the likes of Lord Vader. But the major setback appeared to be that it's on rails...

There was also a Yoga game, video chat with real-time picture sharing, and a new motion controlled dashboard in which you can wave pages to change and tap the air for your choices.

An interlude in the middle of the show revealed Disney's famous castle and Tinkerbell flying around the jumbotrons, but no specifics on a partnership or Disney game were mentioned.

The press conference starts shortly, so hopefully some more questions will be answered such as the price and when exactly the product will launch.

I'll have more for you from the E3 show floor all week long, so keep an eye on TXB.

Here are the official product shots of the shiny, black Kinect:

The game will also include new features, such as a 4-player tag-team mode where players battle in teams of two against each other online. Fans can also enjoy the "deepest story mode of any fighting game" and an "extensive" lineup of the series' iconic characters.

Capcom Teams Up With Playboy for Dead Rising 2

Capcom, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, today confirmed that it has partnered with Playboy magazine to have content from the iconic publication featured in its forthcoming title Dead Rising 2, scheduled for release later this year for the Xbox 360.

Players that discover the Playboy magazine in the game will receive a unique and special upgrade for Chuck Greene, the main character in Dead Rising 2. Furthermore, players will come across Playboy ads and billboards that will feature specially selected issues from the magazine’s 57-year history. The new magazine system for Dead Rising 2, which will feature Playboy along with various other publications, is an evolution of the popular book system from the original Dead Rising game. Along with the special Playboy issue, there will be a variety of different themed magazines that Chuck will be able to pick up for bonuses to use to help fend off the zombie hordes along the way.

“The Sin City-type environment in Dead Rising 2, Fortune City, is a natural playground for the Playboy Bunnies,” said Seon King, Senior Director of Licensing for Capcom Entertainment, Inc. “We have integrated the Playboy brand throughout the game in ways that bring even more life to Fortune City and add to the user experience.”

Real Guitar, Fake Drum New Power Gig Information

Of all the things I'm scheduled to see at E3 next week, Power Gig: Rise of the Six-String looks like it has the most potential to embarrass me in front of a crowd of people. But then again, you've all probably seen that video of AJ Jacobs flailing about playing Natal.

But fans of the music genre can rejoice, Power Gig: Rise of the Six String is scheduled to hit store shelves this October and three new artists have signed on to lend songs to the game: Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews Band and Kid Rock.

Rolling Stone called Eric Clapton "one of the top five greatest guitarists of all time," so of course there's nothing to be intimidated about.

But they've also announced a new drum peripherla that isn't a drum, but a machine that can read where you're hitting in the air. You'll have to see the product images below to understand what I'm talking about, but it may be a cool alternative to the constantly breaking drums from those other guys. But then again, by drumming the air I can already picture drum sticks flying from one's hands on a particularly heavy solo.

Here's their official description of the drum controller: "The AirStrike drum controller consists of two drumsticks and a small unit that rests by the player’s feet that features unique technology that can differentiate the right drumstick from the left. It is this recognition that allows gamers to play the drums with much more true-to-life movement than the drum game peripherals already on the market. This new, engaging style of drum gameplay offers opportunity both for more creativity and more challenge. An added benefit to the design is that the AirStrike is more portable and convenient for gamers who don’t want to clutter their homes with large toy drum units. "From everything I've read about the game, it seems like a step in the right direction for fans of the music genre. Next week's playable version of the game will give the first hints of whether or not that's true.

Peavey and Zivix Announce Strategic Partnership to Revolutionize Music Gaming.

Peavey Electronics, one of the world’s largest manufacturers and suppliers of musical instruments and professional sound equipment, is bringing their music expertise to the videogame world by announcing a strategic partnership with developer Zivix. Peavey and Zivix are introducing the Peavey HeroMaker, a revolutionary full-sized six-string electric guitar and game controller, and the newly developed JamParty: Be the Music casual music videogame coming to console for digital download and PC in fall 2010. Peavey and Zivix will debut both products at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), June 15-17, 2010.

Developed on Gamebryo LightSpeed, JamParty: Be the Music enables burgeoning musicians to become instant producers, mix-masters, and lead guitarists. Players can transition their mastery of traditional rhythm based music games into actual player-controlled live music creation using JamParty’s gigantic library of chords, beats, vocals, and soundscapes. Users can create and play songs, then share their music with other players as MP3s or upload to listening devices and social networks.   JamParty is designed for use with the new full sized HeroMaker guitar, and is also compatible with existing USB supported Rock Band and Guitar Hero guitar controllers.

In addition, Zivix developed a patented “Finger Sensing” system that Peavey integrated into their six-string electric guitar, creating the HeroMaker, a full-sized guitar featuring real strings and frets to let any player play notes, slide and pick.  With the HeroMaker, you can make live music and build basic guitar-playing fundamentals while playing your favorite music video game. You can then plug into a real amp for a fully functional guitar.

Chaos Node Coming

Zombie Monkey Games' premier title Chaos Node will be available for download on the X-box Live in the Indie Games Channel this weekend for only $1.00.

The game is a bit of a cross between a puzzle and action game, leaning more towards the puzzle arena. The challenge is to defend the Chaos Node from being struck by the surrounding particles, while shooting color-matched shots to try and get as high a score as possible. A well laid tutorial will guide new players through the ins and outs of the game's non-conventional rules and play style. A solid soundtrack and excellent visuals bring the whole experience together. The game offers limitless varied game play as the difficulty is large effected by the randomness that only physics can provide. The levels or "Pulses" are infinite, so the game last as long as you do.

Another key feature is the peer to peer networked scoreboards, adding an element of online competition to the game. Working together to with friends and family will be key to getting a high place on the scoreboard. Check it out this weekend, and lets see who will be the first to actually beat my top score!

EA Sports Names Spain as World Cup Winner

In their official simulation, EA Sports ran a simulated tournament of next week's World Cup using their latest iteration of their series 2010 FIFA World Cup.

To accomplish this they "test[ed] all 32 teams under the same conditions they will face in the weeks ahead."

So what's the upshot?

Spain takes down Brazil in the final, winning 3-1.

In addition, South Africa, the home nation, is the first to be elminated. David Villa takes home the Golden Boot with 7 goals, and Kaka wins the Golden Ball.

Here's the full text breakdown of the final and how Spain got there:

"The Final itself was an epic battle as Brazil put on a dazzling display of free-flowing samba style football early on against the Spaniards, taking a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute with a Felipe Melo strike from just inside the box. It didn’t take long for Spain to level the score after a goalie error that left striker David Villa in the clear. He tapped in his 6th goal of the tournament in the 42nd minute. The second half saw fortunes turn in favour of Spain, as their disciplined build up play and domination of possession paid off with a goal in the 61st minute when Villa connected for his second goal of the match, off of Andres Iniesta’s driven cross. Brazil had several efforts on goal in the final third of the match but couldn’t capitalize on its chances as they pushed all players forward in an attempt to draw even, eventually conceding a splendid counter attack goal in the 88th minute from Cesc Fabregas, which delivered Spain the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Spain’s path to FIFA World Cup glory included a quarterfinal 5-4 penalty shootout victory over Italy after an absorbing 1-1 draw, and a 2-1 win over Argentina in the semi final. Brazil’s journey to the Final included a 3-2 win over the Netherlands in the quarter final and a 5-4 shootout victory over England after the two teams played out a 2-2 draw in the semi."

They can simulate all they want, I'm still rooting for the Netherlands.
