Rumor Xbox 3 Launch In 2012 & Dev Kits Before Xmas

The Xbox 3 rumors continue to come out despite Microsoft’s silence. This latest set of rumors comes from Edge.

According to their sources Electronic Arts & Ubisoft Montreal are in possession of “target boxes” for the Xbox 3. What is a target box? Basically it is a personal computer with similar specs to the final product. Think of it kind of like a “pre-development kit”, it may lack all of the fine-tuned elements that those kits bring. The first versions of the development kit are expected to hit developer's doorsteps by Christmas.

The second part of the rumor is where things get murky. If Edges’ sources are correct then everything is on track for a 2012 launch for the Xbox 3. The release date of the next Xbox is a point of contention. Some fans & industry analysts believe that the third Xbox should arrive sometime in 2012 while others believe 2013.

Regardless of the authenticity of this rumor it, the first part falls in line with previous speculation that came out of E3 that big publishers like EA & Ubisoft had development hardware already.

DmC Devs Reportedly Offering Top Players Early Access to Game

Ninja Theory may be seeking feedback from top Devil May Cry players on the series' reboot, DmC: Devil May Cry, according to reports from Joystiq via NeoGAF. According to one forum post, a well-known DMC player received the following from someone claiming to be a developer representative -- I’m part of the team currently developing the new Devil May Cry title at Ninja Theory and I wanted to get in touch to see if you’d like to come in and play the game. Essentially I’m inviting in a very select few really top end DMC players to come and play through a section of the game and talk to some of our team about your experience.

We’ll pay for travel to and from the studio and will also provide lunch. Let me know if this sounds of interest and I can give you some more details. For the moment though, this remains unconfirmed, though we wouldn't be surprised to see Ninja Theory paying closer attention to DMC's die-hard fanbase as they work on a re-imagined version of the game. We'll keep you posted if we hear anything more. If you want to dig deeper, check out the NeoGAF thread.

EA President Confirms Battlefield 4

In news that shouldn't really surprise anyone, IGN is reporting that EA President Frank Gibeau revealed the existence of Battlefield 4 today.

During a keynote at the Unversity of Southern California, Gibeau apparently let slip that "there is going to be a Battlefield 4", the first such mention of a fourth Battlefield title by anyone at the publisher.

Still, considering Battlefield 3's strong sales, today's news should come as no real surprise.

TeamXbox Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 3 Review

Love it or hate it, there is no doubt that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is going to be the biggest selling game of the year, and that creates a lot of expectations. We take a look at the game in our review and find that while Modern Warfare 3 may not innovate the genre or veer too far from the (scripted) path that Infinity Ward set up 4 years ago, it does provide a hell of an experience.

Saints Row 4 Will Be Even Wilder

G4 posted a preview clip for their upcoming interview with Danny Bilson, Vice President at THQ. In the clip Danny reveals that he already knows the plot of Saints Row 4! He promises that the fourth entry will be ‘even wilder’ than what they have revealed for three. It would seem that THQ and Volition would have a hard time toping themselves considering that Saints Row The Third includes Cyberpunk Gangs, Pimps and other kinds of insanity.

Check out the short clip below. We obviously don’t know much else regarding Saints Row 4 just yet. Saints Row The Third ships to retail next Tuesday, November 15th.

Rainbow Six Patriots Gameplay Target Trailer

Ubisoft has taken the surprising move of releasing their "gameplay target" trailer for the upcoming Rainbow Six Patriots. The reason that this is so unusual is because this trailer is not final gameplay or even beta footage but a pre-rendered vision of what the game may play like. Usually these are used by development teams to visualize the look and feel of the final product before it enters full production.

Ubisoft chose to release the target render after various leaks surrounding the game popped up earlier this summer and fall. These leaks included the registration of the domain name "RainbowSixpatriots.com", screen grabs from the target render video and the game's current logo.

We shouldn't really judge the visual quality of the target render, as it was created with a computer and is obviously not running on Xbox 360 hardware. We can critique and discuss some of the coolest moments from the trailer.

Patriots centers around a volatile America where homegrown terrorist organizations have begun causing havoc. The trailer opens with these terrorists breaking in to the home of a presumably middle-aged man on his birthday. They take his wife and child hostage and outfit with a backpack bomb and the goal to deposit the bomb at times square.

As his transport across the Brooklyn bridge crashes he is instructed to continue on foot. From there the gameplay prospective switches to Team Rainbow, the international anti terrorism task force. The first person /third person (when in cover) gameplay we are familiar with returns. For patriots they've incorporated "see through" mechanics similar to detective vision from Arkham City. Members of Rainbow are able to see hostile targets through cars and other in game obstacles.

The rest of the trailer shouldn't be spoiled. Watch it for yourself at the bottom of this news articles. It ends on of the most intense moments we've seen in videogame promotion in a while. If the full game can live up to the vision of this trailer then Patriots might be one of the "must play" games of 2013.

Daytona USA Review

Like any developer with a vast back catalog of much-loved titles, SEGA has always been keen to bust out re-releases of classic games from its glory days. These have included the a smattering of Sonic titles, along with more obscure titles like Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram, but one popular SEGA classic has been missing until now. Daytona USA is a game with its origins in the publisher’s heyday back in the early 90s, and in the years following its release, you couldn’t go anywhere near an arcade without being drawn to its cheesy soundtrack and impressive (for the time) visuals.

Steven Spielberg Said No To Assassin's Creed Movie

After rumors swirled last month that Sony Pictures was close to a deal to produce the Assassin's Creed movie, Vulture is citing unnamed sources that say Ubisoft demanded so much control over the fate of the film that it caused many different studios to pass on the offer.

"They want to be able to pull the plug on the whole movie's development if they decide to. It's ridiculous," said the head of one of the unnamed studios that also passed on the film.

"They're not moviemakers, and the only way to make sure it's a bad movie is to undervalue what movie studios do — and this is a deal that totally undervalues what movie studios do." said another.

A Hollywood agent said that "The whole Ubisoft/Sony deal is a waste of ink, paper and time. The level of control Sony gave up means, effectively, that Assassin's Creed will never — and I mean never — get made."

We can't blame Ubisoft for wanting so much control in the fate of the film -- we've seen so many movies based on video games turn out so bad that we wondered how they were green lighted in the first place.

Sony supposedly said yes to the offer because of how little of an investment they'd have to make in producing the film, effectively taking a gamble -- one we'll have to wait and see if it pays off.

Are you looking forward to the possibility of an Assassin's Creed movie? Let us know in the comments.

PAX East 2012 Registrations Open

The ever-popular Penny Arcade East registrations are now open for those looking to head over to Boston to enjoy one of the largest and most successful game conventions around. Tickets are on sale for $35 per day or for $65 for a 3 day pass, and are sure to sell out well before the April 6th to April 8th date of the con itself.

If you're looking at those dates and thinking "Wait, why does that weekend sound familiar", it probably because April 7th is the Armenian Day of Maternity and Beauty. Also, that week happens to be Easter weekend. The PAX East organizers say they apologize for any trouble this may cause would-be participants, and are working with the city of Boston to (hopefully) ensure that it does not happen again.

Battlefield 3 Ships 10 Million

Just how big is Battlefield 3? Think to the tune of "10 million" big, as EA has announced during a recent financial statement that they've shipped that many copies, with 3 million of those being pre-ordered.

The statement also mentions that retailers have already re-ordered further copies of the game due to its popularity. By comparison, Bad Company 2 sold about 2.3 million copies during its first month of release, meaning Battlefield 3 has already outsold it during the same time frame based on pre-orders alone.

PS3 Outselling Xbox 360 and Others in Europe in 2011

Sony's PlayStation 3 outsold both Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii during the past year, according to numbers dug out from Nintendo's latest financial results by IGN UK.

Hiding behind layers of charts and numbers is the news that Sony shifted 3 million PlayStation 3 units in Europe in the past year, whereas the Xbox 360 and Wii both managed just two million a piece -- Looking at the cumulative sales transition from the beginning of the year, the sales of PS3 are exceeding those of last year, but Wii’s sales showed a year-on-year loss. Xbox 360 is selling well in the U.S., but the transition is nearly the same as last year in Europe. However, 2011 isn't over yet, and as IGN points out, the holiday period traditionally sees strong sales for all gaming hardware, including Xbox 360, which as a particularly strong line-up this time around.

Head on over to IGN UK for more multiplatform analysis.

Report GTA 5 to Feature Multiple Protagonists

Kotaku reports that previous rumors surrounding Grad Theft Auto V being set in a fictional version of Los Angeles are true. They cite 'multiple sources' claiming that the game will also feature multiple playable protagonists. Considering the three protagonists (Johnny, Nico and Luis) that walked the streets in the Episodes of Grand Theft Auto 4 this makes sense.

Fans of the GTA series should instantly recall that we've already visited the Los Angeles area in 2004's Grand Theft Auto San Andreas. Rockstar also has a vast amount of experience modeling bringing the L.A Area to life in last spring's L.A Noir.

Perhaps the innovation will come from the multi-character narrative and gameplay mechanics. GTA 4 introduced a new social phone interface, a cover system and usable Taxis.

IGN.com posted an exhaustive speculative piece regarding the possible improvements we may see in the fifth entry. Could San Andreas' RPG elements return? It is also possible we will be transported to the 1960s or 70s, two eras that the GTA series has yet to explore.

What would you like to see in Grand Theft Auto 5? In the age of smartphones, social networks and recession there are a number of things for Rockstar to poke fun at. We will have more on Grand Theft Auto 5 next week when the teaser trailer is revealed.

Steel Batalion Heavy Armor Gets New Trailer

Capcom is poised to release a sequel to 2003s mech simulator, Steel Battalion, with next year’s Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor.

The game uses both the Kinect and traditional controller in combination. You use the Kinect controls to operate the buttons and levels inside your World War 1 era mech and the controller commands your vehicles movements!

Will using both control options be as fluid as Capcom hopes? We don’t yet but we find out when the game releases in 2012.

Next Xbox Rumored to Carry "Loop" Name, Due 2013

Tech blog X-bit is reporting a selection of rumors said to be sourced from an unofficial Microsoft product roadmap, which places the successor to the Xbox 360 on track for a late 2013 release, with the name (or codename) "Loop" attached to it.

We can't imagine the "Loop" name being the final branding for the machine -- after all, its release is still around two years out, and these things take time to finalize. Remember that before its launch, the Xbox 360 went by the equally quirky name of "Xenon".

Other factoids uncovered from this leaked roadmap include supposed plans for a second-generation, high-precision Kinect sensor around a year after the "Loop" release, in November 2014.

All possible, and even likely, we'd say. However take all this with a pinch of salt until it's confirmed. We'll have some way to go before this is anywhere near official.

New Xbox Launching in 2013

The website Develop learns from multiple reports that the next generation of the Xbox will be in 2013. Here is a snip about it...

The collection of data points to a 2013 launch for the system across all main regions, though early 2014 remains a possibility.

Few in the games business expect Xbox Next to be in stores before the holiday side of 2013 – this Christmas and the next will likely see Microsoft marketing software for Xbox 360, Windows Phone and its Kinect motion controller.

Warner Bros. to Publish The Witcher 2 for 360 in North America

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has announced that it will publish and distribute the Xbox 360 version of CD Projekt's The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.

Warner Bros. will contridubte "sales and marketing resources" to the 360 version of The Witcher 2, which is an adaptation of the PC original, rather than a straight port. The developer's promising "significant enhancements" for 360 gamers -- "We have added significant enhancements to the Xbox 360 version of 'The Witcher 2,' going far beyond simply editing the code to run on a new platform. Thanks to one of the world's newest game engines, the RED Engine, it will be one of the best-looking games ever released on Xbox 360," said Adam Kiciński, President, CD Projekt RED. The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is due to land on Xbox 360 sometime in the first quarter of 2012. Check out today's full press release below -- Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment To Distribute Xbox 360 Version Of "The Witcher 2: Assassins Of Kings" In North America

Warsaw, October 21, 2011 – Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, and CD Projekt RED, developers of the blockbuster Witcher franchise of video games, announced a distribution agreement for the upcoming Xbox 360 release of "The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings" in North America.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment will distribute "The Witcher 2" on Xbox 360, contributing sales and marketing resources.

The console version of "The Witcher 2" is an adaptation of the hit RPG fantasy game on PC. "We have added significant enhancements to the Xbox 360 version of 'The Witcher 2,' going far beyond simply editing the code to run on a new platform. Thanks to one of the world's newest game engines, the RED Engine, it will be one of the best-looking games ever released on Xbox 360," said Adam Kiciński, President, CD Projekt RED.

The story is dedicated to mature players and offers over 40 hours of non-linear gameplay. Starting from four possible beginnings, "The Witcher 2" leads players through different gameplay paths to 16 different endings making it one of the most non-linear and complex storylines ever brought to the console market.

Additionally, the game features a dynamic combat system, which fuses battles with RPG mechanics, giving access to a vast array of different fighting tactics.

"We are very pleased to partner with CD Projekt RED to bring 'The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings' to consoles in the United States, Canada and Mexico," said Kevin Kebodeaux, Senior Vice President, Sales Americas, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. "Witcher is a AAA franchise that fits well with our strategic distribution of high quality games, making it a great addition to our 2012 line-up in North America."

"We are sure that this partnership with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, with its strong position in the entertainment sector and particularly in the video and games distribution market in North America, will help us to achieve even bigger success in the most important market for Xbox 360 games. This is also a big distinction for us, that Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment recognizes 'The Witcher 2' as a rare example of a game with world-class production values, which merges a very ambitious and complex approach with big commercial potential," said Adam Kiciński.

Release of "The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings" on Xbox 360 is expected in Q1 2012. More information about the project can be found here: www.thewitcher.com.

Battlefield 3 Coverage Coming Soon, EA To Release Day One Patch

More than a few readers have asked on the forums, and in news article comments, what the status of our Battlefield 3 review is. We know that Battlefield 3 is one of the most anticipated games of the year and we can’t wait to cover it.

Electronic Arts issued a statement to us yesterday afternoon regarding a Day One patch that will hit Xbox Live as early as Monday morning. This patch implements fixes and feedback from the recent multiplayer beta.

“DICE are perfectionists -- they will not stop polishing the game until it is in your hands. The Day 1 update incorporates real-time feedback from the beta, ensuring that the consumer experience on launch day is outstanding. It is the actual consumer experience that we wish to be reviewed. The game with the Day 1 update will be available for review on Oct. 25.” - Statement as released by E.A

We’ll receive our review copy sometime Monday, and obviously reviewing it just 24 hours after receiving it wouldn’t be doing the game justice. We plane to post a video comparison between the HD and “SD” texture packs for noon on launch day. As well we will have our initial impressions of the campaign for all to read come Tuesday afternoon.

Our final verdict and multiplayer breakdown will come later on in the week. Rest assured we know how important Battlefield 3 is to the community. We’re just as excited to get our hands on the game as you are!

Epic Talks About Next Gen Console Ideas

Gears of War house Epic Games knows a little something about working with hardware -- not only have they created one of the best selling franchises on the Xbox 360, but their Unreal engine is used by a large amount of games. Which makes them qualified to give their opinions on what they'd like to see in the next generation of consoles.

While the obvious answer is "better graphics", they also want an increased online portion for advanced networking within games and the console itself, and an integrated Kinect sensor into the next generation of Xbox.

Those with good memories may remember that Epic had a hand in convincing Microsoft to boost the Xbox 360's RAM, which makes this particularly interesting.

Assassin's Creed's Ezio Rumored for Soul Calibur 5 Appearance

Eveyrone's favorite medieval throat-slasher could be the latest addition to the Soul Calibur roster, if a new apparently-leaked screenshot is to be believed. The image, which has cropped up over on Joystiq, appears to show Assassin's Creed's Ezio Auditore on the character select screen, suggesting that he'll be a playable character in the upcoming fighter.

As Joystiq notes, there's no way of confirming the validity of this image, but we'd certainly welcome the change to bring a little ancient Venetian violence to the Soul Calibur universe. We'll keep you posted on any developments, as we await SC5's early 2012 release.

Xbox 360 Outsold Wii TwotoOne in September, Says Pachter

With the Xbox 360's price having remained almost stationary for the past 2-3 years, some have been wondering if the console could use a price cut in order to boost sales, and see off competition in the all-important fourth quarter of 2011.

Someone who's not too concerned with the need for a price drop is industry analyst Michael Pachter, who estimates that the Xbox 360 is still outselling the two other consoles -- in the case of the Wii, by a ratio of almost 2:1.

CNET reports that Pachter's figures put the 360 at a fitting 360,000 units sold last month, versus 260,000 PS3s and just 190,000 Wiis. On the portable side, Pachter said he believes Nintendo sold 225,000 3DS units and 185,000 DS units in September.

If Pachter is right and Microsoft did sell the most hardware units in September, it would mark yet another successful month for the console maker. Last month, Microsoft reported that with its sales victory in August, it had sold more console units in the U.S. than any other company for 14 of the past 15 months. With the highly-competitive pre-holiday stretch beginning, Microsoft, and the 360, seem to be in a stronger position than ever.

Coming Soon UFC For Xbox Live

It seems like almost every big piece of news coming out of Microsoft in regards to the Xbox in the past week has been focused on their ever expanding catalogue of video and TV services. Today they announced a partnership with UFC to provide Pay Per View fights and extra content that can be streamed right from your Xbox.

The new service will launch in the United States on December 1st giving fans access to previews, fight statistics, upcoming matches and most importantly the ability to stream the fight live - just like you would over a traditional cable box.

You won’t need to worry about converting the cost of the fight in to Microsoft points or fumbling with prepaid cards. The stream can be charged right to a credit card rather than using Microsoft’s proprietary currency. Pricing should be similar to cable providers. The average rate for a UFC fight on cable is around $45.00 USD.

Exclusive to the Xbox version of the streaming event is the Interactive Fight Card. This mode puts the stream of the fight in a smaller window on the left side of the screen. On the right side you are able to view statistics of the fighters such as their nationality, weight, reach and record. UFC also plans to stream real-time predictions for the outcome of the current match.

Are you a fan of UFC? IGN has even more details about UFC on Xbox 360. The service will be available starting December 1st in the United States. No word yet on the rest of world.

Life Still Left in Battlefield Bad Company Franchise

Battlefield 3 may be all the rage, but that doesn't mean developer DICE has given up on the Battlefield: Bad Company franchise. In an interview with The Guardian, DICE's Patrick Liu says responds to a question about the fate of the popular spin-off franchise -- Well, we haven't killed Bad Company! But we can only make so many games. Be patient – there might be something else coming up… However, nothing's been announced, and with DICE wanting to avoid making Battlefield an annual series, it'll be 2013 before any future Bad Company title could release. He adds that DICE "always has a couple of projects going", but that not all come to fruition.

We'll be watching with interest to see whether a Bad Company 3 could be on the cards once Battlefield 3 is on store shelves.

Brace for impact! With more than three million copies sold in its first week, "Gears of War 3" is the biggest game of the year, and today Microsoft and Epic Games announced the acclaimed title is about to get even bigger with the Horde Command Pack game add-on, launching Nov. 1.

Taking you deeper into the fight with three explosive new maps, three new playable characters, two new weapon skins, and additional achievements worth 250 Gamerscore, the Horde Command Pack also includes new fortification upgrades to help you mow down the Lambent and Locust threats in the fan-favorite Horde mode.

Blood Drive – The Jacinto Medical Plaza was overwhelmed by evacuated citizens after the government-sanctioned Hammer Strikes, and the ensuing riots quickly turned this safe haven into a dangerous inferno. An abundance of high ground and funneled choke points make this map a returning favorite to Horde.
Rustlung – Once the pride of the Royal Tyran Navy, the foredecks of this decommissioned battleship are now riddled with bullet holes. Any team with the fortitude to hold the exposed central torpedo bay will find that the ship's Loader has been replaced with a battle-ready Silverback mech suit.
Azura – This island resort was once the exclusive domain of Sera's educated elite, but the tranquil water gardens and lush foliage have become a hotly contested combat zone. Dual snipers overlook a powerful explosive weapon, while the defensive central platform may be your last resort of retreat.
· New fortification upgrades:
Command Center – A brand new type of fortification that allows you to call in fire support from sniper teams, mortar strikes and even multiple Hammers of Dawn.
Decoy Upgrade – A new fortification level that turns your decoy into an Onyx Guard bot that will fight in your defense.
Sentry Upgrade – This upgrade adds a fire bolt sentry that deals much more damage and is very effective against Berserkers.
Silverback Upgrade – This advancement allows you to upgrade your Silverback exo-suit with devastating rockets and extra levels of repair cost reduction.
· New characters:
Onyx Guard
Big Rig Dizzy
Bernie
· New weapon skins:
Team Plasma
Jungle Camo

Also playable in Beast mode and privately hosted Versus matches, the Horde Command Pack promises to extend your "Gears of War 3" experience with countless hours of multiplayer mayhem on Xbox LIVE. Every generation has had its own take on Charles Xavier, Magneto and the rest of the mutants. They've been the subject of everything from 8-bit side-scrollers to RPGS like the excellent Marvel Ultimate Alliance series. The latest studio to develop a mutated X-Gene is Silicon Knights. Can the studio that helped pioneer psychological horror do the blue & gold heroes justice with the release of X-Men Destiny?

Forza 4 Peripherals Now Available for PreOrder

If you're into sacrificing large amounts of cash in search of the perfect racing experience, then Fanatec has you covered, with a range of official, Forza Motorsport 4-branded peripherals now available for pre-order.

The complete Forza 4 control setup include CSR Wheel ($250), CSR Elite Pedals ($150) and the CSR Shifter ($60). Yeah, we weren't kidding when we said they were expensive.

All are wireless and partly constructed of aluminum, and the wheel even has an LED read-out. In the official promo shots at least, all three look to be well-built. But still, $460 for a racing controller setup does seem just a tad on the insane side to us. If you're tempted, dig yourself out of your pile of disposable income and let us know in the comments.

Syndicate Coming in 2012

From satellite tracking to GPS to geocaching, the world is hooked on technology. It’s not impossible to imagine a time when we slip one step further and move from external devices to internal…literally implanting chips inside people. Prosthetic limbs already prove that the relationship between organic and manufactured can yield incredibly positive results. So, why not CHIP technology? Maybe it really could happen. And if it did, would it be used for the greater social good or for corporate profit? These are the types of ethical and moral questions asked by EA’s cult classic game, Syndicate back in 1993. Now, on February 21, 2012, gamers will again contemplate these same questions as they play through an action packed, epic sci-fi shooter adventure in EA and Starbreeze’s remake of the game.

Set in 2069, Syndicate takes players into a dark, Machiavellian world where corporations are vying for market dominance with no government oversight. The people become the causality of this war as these corporations have the technology and power to influence the public via bio-chips installed in their heads. Syndicate blends fast paced action and futuristic settings with innovative chip breach gameplay to provide a unique and brutal sci-fi first person shooter experience.

In the game, players take on the role of Miles Kilo, Eurocorp’s latest prototype agent. Through DART 6 bio-chip technology implanted in their heads, gamers can dilate down time, see through walls, breach the digital world and enemies around them using a variety of upgradable hacking mechanics. Gamers that reserve Syndicate will receive The Executive Package at no extra charge, which includes unique perks for the game’s deep 4-player co-op campaign. Like every good executive, players with The Executive Package will be able to stand out amongst their friends as they flaunt their solid gold versions of all loadout guns, utilize golden dart vision, and showcase the executive gold Syndicate logos during co-op missions.

NHL 12 Sets Sales Record

EA Sports latest hockey simulator, NHL 12, hit store shelves just over a week ago and already the title has posted impressive numbers. The latest entry set a record for the franchise with 27 million $ in sales (all figures in USD). In terms of units moved EA reports that over 450,000 games were sold across North America and Europe.

"NHL 12 is our most exciting hockey game ever, with more than 300 gameplay improvements and the ability to play with some of the NHL's greatest legends." Andrew Wilson, VP for EA Sports.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time with NHL 12 while reviewing it last week. In fact I am still playing through it in Be a Pro Mode. Here is a quick excerpt from last week’s review:

NHL 12 offers a surprising amount of depth. Across the multiple modes – Be a Pro, GM Mode and Online especially – you could easily loose 100s of hours. Some of these modes do throw a lot of information at you, and if you're not well versed in Hockey statistics it may seem confusing, but overall each mode presents a unique and enjoyable experience.

It’s up to you whether you take the job or not.

Crimson Alliance Price Structure Explained

Crimson Alliance, the newest hack and slash dungeon crawler for the Xbox Live Arcade, has gained a lot of free press thanks to it being the "free game" given to those who purchased all five Summer of Arcade titles. If you log in the Xbox.com Marketplace or the Dashboard you'll notice that Crimson Alliance is free. What's the deal? Allow us to explain.

Certain Affinity's latest game is the first "freemium" or "free to play" game on the Xbox Live Marketplace. The free "full version" that anyone can download will indeed give you access to all three classes from the start but you will only be able to progress so far. After that you will be prompted to purchase one of the following "packs" to continue playing.

1200 MSP ($15) - All Classes Pack, gives you access to each playable class and their full progression tree.
800 MSP ($8) - Each class has its own Class Unlock that can be purchased. This is viewed as a cheaper option for those who only want to play one role.

Presumably the version that will go out to all Summer of Arcade purchasers will be the premium 1200 edition. It would be kind of silly and frustrating to find out that you were only given one class for free after purchasing all of those games. Not to mention if that were the case, then the cost of to unlock all three classes would skyrocket to nearly $20!

What are your feelings on Free to Play or "Freemium" games on the Xbox Live Arcade? Does Certain Affinity have the right idea when it comes to the pricing structure? Let us know in the comments.

Hands On With Batman Arkham City

Batman has always been one of my favorite super heroes of all time. Growing up as a kid in the early 1990s I watched the Tim Burton Batman films and of course I tuned in every weekday to watch the Batman Animated Series. 2 years ago when I found out that the voice of Batman, Kevin Conroy, and Mark Hamil, the voice of the Joker, had both signed on for Arkham Asylum I was excited. Now the entire asylum has been set loose in an entire section of the city with Batman Arkham City.

5 New BloodRayne Beytral Screenshots

WayForard Technologies, the California based developer behind the upcoming 2D reimagining of the BloodRayne franchise, has released 5 new screnshots to promote the game.

These new screenshots showcase two different environments – one purple and one green. BloodRayne Betrayl uses a very dark palette of colors namely blacks, greys and reds accented by very bright lighting and particle effects. Some of the best examples of this contrast come from screenshots featuring gunfire or magical spells.

BloodRayne Betrayal has a very Castlevania Symphony of the Night look to it - With its focus on gothic architecture and side-scrolling action. What are your thoughts on BloodRayne Betrayal? One this is for sure, it will be better than the Uwe Bowl movies from a few years back.

Baseball Announced For Kinect Sports Season 2

Microsoft has unveiled the inclusion of Baseball in Kinect Sports Season 2 ahead of PAX Prime. The minigame is set to offer both single and multiplayer fun on the virtual diamond. Two players can take on each other – one taking on the role of the Batter and the other taking on the role of the pitcher. Attendees at PAX prime are able to hit the field at Microsoft’s booth.

For those of us who can’t attend PAX Microsoft has provided a breakdown of what we can expect from Kinect Sports Season 2’s baseball mode. While batting players can choose to bunt, swing for the homerun or step forward and add some extra force to their swing using their Star Batter. Once the ball is in the air players must run the bases, presumably using a similar running mechanic to the original Kinect Sport’s track and field mode. The Kinect Sensor monitors the pitchers throwing velocity and angle to calculate the speed of the pitch as well as its type (Fastball, Curveball ect).

Alongside these details Microsoft also released a few screenshots of the Baseball minigame in action. Microsoft expects Kinect Sports Season 2 to ship on October 28th in North America.

Counter Strike Global Offensive Details & Video

Valve unveiled Counter Strike Global Offensive earlier this month at GamesCom. Now that PAX has begun the press and gamers alike are getting their hands on the game. IGN Xbox 360 got a chance to sit down with the title and they have uncovered a whole pile of information about the game. We’ve got details on the gameplay, guns and maps of Counter Strike Global Offensive.

Global Offensive has been liked by some as an ‘incremental upgrade’ to the franchise rather than an entirely new game. The core concepts have changed very little, the game still pits a team of Counter Terrorism Agents against Terrorists forces on a variety of maps. Objective game plan such as defusing /placing bombs and rescuing hostages are still at the heart of Counter Strike.

Valve has changed how you will be arming yourself as well. Unlike Counter Strike and Counter Strike Source you no longer have unlimited money. Instead money is earned by the winning team and the amount of cash earned has been ramped down. Don’t expect to be wielding a high powered assault rifle within the first few rounds. Valve has confirmed that that game will ship with at least eight maps including Aztec, Dust 1 &2 and the classic office. Look for Counter Strike Global Offensive to ship sometime in the first quarter of 2012.

Microsoft To Release Monster Hunter Bundle In Japan

Retailers may be ramping down promotion and orders for the Xbox 360 but Microsoft is fighting back. On September 28th a bundle will launch that combines the Xbox 360 250GB Slim with Capcom's latest lootfest Monster Hunter Frontier Online.

The redeemable code for Frontier Online allows players to play the game for free for a limited time and gives them some starting gear. Unlike other Monster Hunter games Frontier Online is not a single player experience. It is a multiplayer only endeavor complete with subscription fee.

Do you think that the Japanese Audiences will bite at Microsoft's latest offerings? The bundle will be priced at 29,800 YEN, which is the equivalent of $390 USD. To put things in to prospective some Japanese retailers have reported that the Halo Reach Slim Console, that was release just 12 months ago, can be found for as little as $120 USD.

Batman Arkham City Gets T for Teen Rating from ESRB

The Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB) has gotten around to rating Rocksteady's Batman: Arkham City, giving the upcoming bat-'em-up a T for Teen rating, according to reports from IGN 360.

Here's a summary of the ESRB's ratings reports for Arkham City. On the whole, nothing significantly more risqué than the original... Content Descriptors:
Alcohol Reference, Blood, Mild Language, Suggestive Themes, Use of Tobacco, Violence

Rating Summary:
This is an action-adventure game featuring characters from the Batman franchise. Players assume the role of Batman as he investigates Arkham City, a neighborhood overrun by psychopathic criminals and former prison inmates. As players explore the city and infiltrate hideouts, they punch and kick criminals in melee-style combat, using various gadgets (e.g., explosive gel, smoke pellets, a grappling gun) to defend themselves against gun-wielding thugs and villains. The frenetic combat is highlighted by cries of pain, punching sounds, realistic gunfire, and slow-motion effects. In some sequences, players must solve puzzles or use stealth to incapacitate enemies and free hostages; when players fail a challenge, the hostage will lose his life. Some environments contain bloodstains on the floor or furniture; other cutscenes depict spots of blood on injured characters. During the course of the game, some female characters are dressed in form-fitting outfits that expose large amounts of cleavage; one background sign depicts the silhouette of a woman and the words "Live Nude." The dialogue also contains some suggestive references (e.g., "The anger, the frustration, the hints of repressed sexual tension" and "Sure could go for some porn right now."). One sequence depicts a character smoking a cigar, and there are various references to alcohol (e.g., "She got a little drunk and killed her classmates," "I'd give anything for a nice cold beer right now."). The words "b*tch," "a*s," and "bastard" can be heard in dialogue.
