Fable III's new leveling system has been shown in full as Peter Molyneux showed off an interesting new approach for Lionhead's forthcoming adventure game.
As part of a demo of the game at Brighton's Develop conference, Molyneux showed a system that's a manifestation of his desire to completely remove menus and lists from the Fable universe.
Like The Sanctuary Fable III's answer to the pause menu the leveling up system is an in-game area, this time a path shrouded in mist. Different gates block the way to a castle in the distance, and as each one is unlocked it progresses player towards the castle.
Guild Seals, or followers as they've been previously called, are the game's unified XP system, earned through various in-game antics. They're used to unlock each gate, while chests between each gate unlock various abilities.
"I love the visual metaphor of travelling along the road," said Molyneux, "I love giving people the opportunity to choose their game experience."
Leveling up of weapons & gauntlets is also done within this area.
