Pirates Use Exploit To Steal MS Points

A group of hackers have cracked some of the algorithms Microsoft used to generate redeemable codes for promotions. The codes would add 160 MS Points to a user’s account. The hackers were able to crack the algorithm for the 48 hour Xbox Live trails included in new games as well as codes for the Halo Reach avatar props.

The exact amount of virtual currency stolen has not been reported by Microsoft. Early media reports put the number somewhere around $1.6 million USD. Sources informed IGN.com that the actual amount of stolen points was “much lower” than the reported amount.

Since the exploit became public Microsoft has fixed the method used to gain the illegitimate points. They did not release the gamertags of those involved or what actions have already been taken. They simply have stated that they will deal with them on an individual basis.
